John: Good point. I always wondered that myself. Are Sports stars better than any other human being in their area of expertise? What about a mother bringing up children, or a doctor, nurse, even an astronaut!

The NFL is hardly a bastion of traditional family values; it is often the opposite. Tim Tebow is the exception rather than the rule.

Answer: Except that Tim Tebow is not in the NFL and most scouts don’t think he ever will be because he’s not NFL quarterback material. If Tebow makes it at all in the NFL I doubt it will be at quarterback. We only hear about the NFL players when the mess up. But many NFL players donate a lot of time and money to various charities. Darrel Green, Jay Schrader, Monte Colman, Art Monk and other Redskins lived in my neighborhood in Virginia near Dulles Airport during the 80s. I got to meet and know some of these guys mostly from the racket ball club near the Airport. The work they did in the community was greatly appreciated but hardly ever reported.

I find it interesting that the same people bemoaning the “corruption of values” in American society are often the same ones glued to their television sets for college and professional football games. The NFL is hardly a bastion of traditional family values; it is often the opposite. Tim Tebow is the exception rather than the rule. As GK Chesterton said, “There is little disagreement about what is right and what is wrong.
Where you find wide divergence is the number of wrongs that we will tolerate.” And in what context we will tolerate them. We claim to abhor the medieval Catholic practice of buying indulgences, and yet the reality is that if you are wealthy, you are forgiven.

At least Michael Vick served his time. Let us give him a chance to prove his repentance. God have mercy on all of those never called to repent, and those of us who turn a blind eye to their sins and worship their athleticism.

I blink aplenty.
I was always somewhat troubled with the knowledge that children commonly seemed to view sports figures, movie stars, or singers as role models to emulate, instead of their own parents or other relatives…or at least people in history who are well known for actually DOING something important or selfless, like Nikola Tesla, Mother Teresa, Edward Jenner, or Rosa Parks, for example.
