The wildest, craziest, kinkiest girl I ever dated was a "good Christian" girl. Her mother didn't approve of me because I was a Pagan, she thought I would corrupt her precious little angel.
If only she knew that her 19 year old "good Christian"daughter was trying to get ME interested in bondage, hot wax, closepins, spanking, and rape roleplay!!!
She bothered the heck out of this "devil worshiper"....and dumped me because I wouldn't agree to do those things. You know how we met? She showed up one night at a Witches Meet Up group.
And two of the most evil people I have ever personally known were both Christians. One of them, a young man that worked with me for a few months, was a complete sociopath. Between trying to preach the Gospel to me and prove the glory of God, he would cut up little helpless animals. I once grabbed a machete he was thrusting down to skewer a toad we had uncovered one day while weeding a flower bed. As he was putting his weight behind this blade who's dirty edged point was was in my fist he was saying half tauntingly "What's wrong? My God could resurrect this toad. Can't YOUR god do that? Besides, they are here for us to use as we please."
He was the son of a Pastor.
The point I'm trying to make here is that raising your children in a strict, Christian upbringing is NOOOOOOOOOOO guarantee that your kids will behave the way you want them to.
Being Christian is not enough.

Young people should go out in groups. They can have fun, but not have the pressures of one-on-one dates. That's what my Mom allowed and it kept me from being put in a bad situation, but I still had a good social life (even though my curfew was way earlier than everybody elses. I hated it at the time but am grateful now!)

Mike: I agree about groups getting together for some kind of supervisionary dating, of course you could only get your youth to do this if they are actually Christians! Try getting your unsaved son to keep to the straight and narrow where girls are concerned and it is an almost impossible feat!
In today's society it makes it very difficult for young people to keep to any moral code, but I like the way they have tried to solve this problem in America. It is called The Ring Thing. Christian boys and girls who pledge to stay virgins until they marry, and they wear a ring to signify this vow.

Even before I was saved I realized that from time to time dating was indeed a sin, and God punished me. You would have to know some of my dates to understand. I thank God that punishment for my indiscretion was swift and I repented by saying, "I will never take .......out again."

That said, as a believer I do know that dating can put one in a situation that goes against scripture. Dating for teenages, outside of groups getting together under adult supervision, can lead to problems no family wants to have to experience.

Emoryspen: I counted up 50 different guys...

Good lord, why'd/how'd you date so many guys? And you never crossed the line (you weren't explicit)?

That's a lot of undedicated relationships. Sounds like you missed your chance at having kids too (or did you?).

I don't think I could even cycle through friends that fast, must less potential lovers/mates... Oh, and it is very possible to socialize with people of the opposite sex without dating them.

Rob must have pricked your pride.

Hi,

First of all, I am not a young person; however, I think it is outrageous that your guest thinks that there are no Christians with enough self-restraint to date many others and not "cross the line." My husband and I married when we were in our forties, but I started casual dating at age 13, and after I married, I counted up 50 different guys I had dated in high school and during my working career. I am a bit offended by his comment. "No one will call and say they did not cross the line."
My husband was equally involved in the dating scene. His parents sent him to "Cotillion" where he could not only meet and date young women, but where he would also learn manners and culture.

Having said all that, I think it is obvious that dating is a whole other ballgame now. When I hear about "date rape" and other absurdities like that, I don't blame the fathers for wanting to keep their daughters out of the hands of predatory males. When my husband and I came along we were taught that self-control was a part of growing up, and that we were EXPECTED to keep our emotions and everything else under control. (Remember the comparisons of today's students' meanness in high school with the mischief of yesterday: "Chewing gum, running in the halls, skipping study hall, compared to today's aggregous misbehavior: bringing knives and guns to school, accosting teachers and students in the halls and in the restrooms?")

I am sorry to say that I am glad I don't have any young people whom I have to protect from their own peers. When we were dating, it was an acceptable means of socialization, a means of getting to know the opposite sex, of getting acquainted with their thinking and behavior. Sad to say that is no longer the case, and maybe Rob's idea (along with all those who agreed with him) is the only way that some kind of social sanity can be reclaimed in the lives of our young people.
